Matching Tattoos

A song about young promises, permanent marks, and the people you thought would stay forever.

Matching Tattoos is about the kind of closeness that feels permanent when you’re young.

There are people you meet at certain ages who feel like they’re going to be part of your life forever. Friends, first loves, almost-loves, the people who know your secrets, the people who see you before you’ve figured yourself out. You make promises from inside the moment, and the moment feels so strong that you can’t imagine it changing.

That’s why matching tattoos felt like the perfect image. They’re romantic, reckless, funny and sad all at once. A permanent mark made by people who are still changing.

The song isn’t really judging that. I don’t think every promise that fails was fake. Sometimes people mean what they say when they say it. Sometimes forever is true for a season, even if it doesn’t survive the rest of your life.

Matching Tattoos is about looking back with tenderness instead of bitterness. It’s about old versions of yourself, old friendships, old plans, and the strange feeling of carrying a mark from a person who no longer belongs to your everyday life.

Some things stop meaning what they used to. That doesn’t mean they mean nothing.

And finally, no I don’t have a tattoo of Micky Mouse anywhere on my body.
