A song about stepping into your own life after years of feeling like you were watching from the sidelines.

Main Character has a sense of humour, but I don’t think it’s a shallow song.

For a long time, I was much more comfortable observing than being observed. I watched people. I wrote things down. I noticed dynamics, crushes, arguments, little betrayals, the way someone’s face changed when they were trying not to cry. That’s useful for a songwriter, but it can also become a hiding place.

There comes a point when you realise you’ve been narrating your own life from the edge instead of actually stepping into it.

Main Character came from wanting to break that habit. Not in a selfish way, and not in the internet sense where everything has to become aesthetic and dramatic. More in the basic human sense of admitting that your needs, wants, mistakes and dreams are allowed to matter.

I think a lot of people, especially people who grew up feeling invisible or complicated, learn to make themselves easier to overlook. This song pushes against that.

It’s playful because claiming yourself should have joy in it. But underneath the joke is something serious: nobody else gets to decide whether your life is worth taking up space in.
